Patriot Launch Ramp Improvement Project
The town of Patriot is a very small town in southeastern Indiana located right on the Ohio River. They needed to relocate their boat launch ramp from a location that feed directly into the Ohio River to an adjacent location that feed into a protected cove that had an inlet to the Ohio.
Heartland Dredging was a subcontractor on this project and our scope of work was to dredge the inlet leading into the river.
The material had to be dredged and pumped into geotextile tubes located on the project site. The pumping distance ranged from 300 feet to a maximum of 500 feet. Approximately 300 cubic yards of in place material was removed. The material consisted of find silts and sands with an area that that contained a layer of hard clay.
The disposal area was set up with (2) 50 ft x 30 ft geotextile tubes placed on a layer of plastic sheeting. The dewatered quantity measured in the tubes was approximately 160 cubic yards yielding roughly a 2:1 reduction in material. After the dewatering was completed the prime contractor cut open the tubes, loaded the material into dump trucks and hauled it to a permanent disposal location.
Both the prime contractor and the Town of Patriot were very pleased with the end result.
